Businesses & Locations

In Mapsmith, locations are organized under businesses. A business represents a brand or company and defines the default pin style. Each business can have one or more locations.

Businesses

A business is a container for locations. It defines the pin appearance (color, icon, scale) that all its locations inherit by default.

Creating a Business

  1. Go to Mapsmith → Businesses
  2. Click Add Business
  3. Fill in the details:
    • Business Name — Displayed as the group heading in the sidebar
    • Description — Optional internal description
    • Timezone — Used for the hours display on the frontend
    • Pin Color — The color of the map pin for all locations in this business
    • Pin Icon URL — Optional custom icon image displayed inside the pin
    • Pin Scale — Resize the pin from 0.5x to 2.0x
  4. Click Save

Duplicating a Business

To duplicate a business along with all of its locations, click the Duplicate button next to the business in the list. You'll be prompted to enter a new name. The duplicate will include copies of all locations with the same addresses, hours, and settings.

Locations

Locations are the individual addresses that appear as pins on the map and entries in the sidebar.

Adding a Location

  1. Go to Mapsmith → Businesses and click Edit on a business
  2. Click Add Location
  3. Fill in the details:
    • Location Name — Displayed in the sidebar and popover (e.g. "Downtown Office")
    • Address — Full street address. Mapsmith will geocode this to get latitude/longitude automatically
    • City, State, Zip, Country — Used for search filtering
    • Phone — Displayed as a clickable tel: link
    • Website — Displayed as a clickable link
    • Hours — Set opening and closing times for each day of the week, or mark days as closed
    • Timezone — Overrides the business timezone for this specific location
    • Custom Fields — Add arbitrary key-value pairs (Pro feature)
  4. Click Save

Enabling / Disabling Locations

Each location has an Enabled toggle. Disabled locations are still saved but won't appear on any map. This is useful for seasonal closures or locations under construction.

Location Map Usage

In the Mapsmith → Locations list view, each location shows which maps it's assigned to with colored badges. This helps you keep track of where each location is being used.

Geocoding

When you enter an address for a location, Mapsmith uses the Google Geocoding API to automatically determine the latitude and longitude. You can also manually set coordinates by editing the lat/lng fields directly.

If geocoding fails, check that your Google Maps API key has the Geocoding API enabled and is not restricted from using it.
